College basketball: UConn opens the season with a big win over Arkansas
Hartford, Connecticut - The University of Connecticut Huskies opened their women’s college basketball season with a big home win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday afternoon.
The second-ranked Huskies dominated the unranked Razorbacks 95-80 for their first win of the season while putting Arkansas in the loss column for the first time this year.
Connecticut set the tone early by controlling the first quarter by holding the Razorbacks to only 16 points.
Arkansas managed to do better in the second but still trailed the Huskies by 10 going into halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Huskies added to their comfortable lead during the third quarter and capped it off with a dominating fourth where they held the Razorbacks to only 18 points.
Arkansas never held a lead nor tied in this game.
The player spotlight
Huskies sophomore guard and last season’s team scoring leader, Paige Bueckers (20) was back in action, looking to pick up from where she and her team left off.
She outplayed everyone, putting in work for all 40 minutes of the game.
Bueckers was in the zone, only missing four of her shot attempts.
She finished the game shooting 15-for-19 from the field for a career-high 34 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
The big picture
The University of Connecticut comes into this season looking to get over coming up short in last year’s national championship game to the Arizona Wildcats.
For the last two decades, the Huskies have practically been a lock for the Women’s Final Four every year, and after a big win like this one, it looks like business as usual for UConn as they progress through this season.
On Saturday, the Huskies will host the Minnesota Golden Gophers while on Friday, the Razorbacks will be on the road for an interstate game against the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
