College basketball sees big mid-season shift in dominance
Houston, Texas - Following a week of shocking upsets from high-ranked teams, is college basketball beginning to see a new shift in dominance on the hardwood?
During last week's showdowns, the NCAA saw a historic number in the losses among the AP's top 25 ranked teams in a single day – 11 on Saturday, which ties a previous all-time high.
Of the 11 losses, nine programs lost games on the road, despite only two having faced other ranked opponents.
Adding insult to injury, two more top-ranked programs shockingly lost to low and unranked opponents on Sunday.
With March Madness just two months away, many of those losses will have a major impact on the season’s conference races.
In the Pac-12, Arizona's loss to Oregon bumped the Wildcats to a 4-3 record, a significant distance from catching up to the UCLA Bruins, who sit at the top of the leaderboard with a perfect 7-0 within the conference.
Duke, once a powerhouse, is sitting well below the ACC's current first place team Clemson (7-0 in the conference), having fallen to a 4-3 ACC record – likely putting them out of the run for a conference title.
As the beginning of the season has seen some unprecedented changes on the court with new teams rising to overcome dominant programs, will they become the winning faces of college basketball?
Top-tier NCAA basketball teams are facing struggles this year
It seems like anything goes this year, as there is currently no team in men’s college basketball that is clearly overpowering the rest.
Every program has experienced at least one loss so far this season, and many different teams could clinch the honor of cutting down the nets in April as the national champion.
In fact, within the AP Poll's top 25 ranking, No. 1 has changed several times – with the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC all taking turns nabbing the top spot.
What continues to shock fans the most, however, is the ongoing struggle of top-tier teams.
North Carolina, who had four of their five starters return from last season, has tumbled out of the national rankings altogether after initially being crowned the preseason's best team.
Kentucky, a known powerhouse program that opened the season as the fourth-best ranked team, is now also unranked, even with the support of the reigning National Player of the Year winner Oscar Tshiebwe. The Wildcats are currently 11-6 overall, 2-3 in the SEC, and have yet to earn a win in Quad 1, a metric system used to rate an opponent by the NCAA men's basketball tournament committee.
Sinking well below their program reputation and typical past conference rankings, UNC and Kentucky will need close to perfect showings in their upcoming games if they want a chance at a tournament seed in March.
And while it may be hard to catch the attention of the tournament committee, there are still more big games left in the season to shake things up in the race for the national title.
UNC's next test will come on Tuesday against Boston College at 7PM EST, followed by Kentucky hosting Georgia at 9PM EST.
