College basketball: First month of NCAA action slams with surprises and shifts
Houston, Texas - The first month of the men's college basketball season is in the books and with a long season ahead, things are already shifting in a direction no one saw coming.
We’re one month into the NCAA basketball season, and so much has already changed since preseason expectations.
So far we've witness shocking upsets, wild buzzer beaters moments, and a big change up in who is the best team in the nation.
Some teams have impressed over the first four weeks (hello UConn), while others had disastrous starts that have failed to live up to high expectations (we're looking at you, North Carolina).
While it's still very early in a long season of basketball, fans are starting to get a good look at what to expect for the road ahead.
Here's a look at what we've learned so far after this season's first month of college basketball.
North Carolina is struggling ... bad
North Carolina going from No. 1 in the preseason rankings to unranked in a matter of four weeks is utterly shocking.
Many believed the Tar Heels' run to the Final Four last year, coupled with almost their entire roster returning, would result in UNC being a top contender this season.
Yet as we've witnessed, that is certainly not the case so far. North Carolina is on a four-game losing streak, falling to Iowa State, Alabama, Indiana, and Virginia Tech.
More noteworthy, for a team with so much veteran experience, this year's Tar Heels have been playing with very little cohesiveness. Specifically, the struggles of Caleb Love and RJ Davis, once dubbed as two of the nation’s best guards, have severely plagued the team.
Purdue Boilermakers are a serious threat
No one has a better back-to-back pair of wins on its resume right now than Purdue.
Blowing out Gonzaga and Duke on neutral courts less than 48 hours apart has truly solidified this Boilermakers team as one to watch for tournament season.
Purdue began the season unranked, entered the polls at No. 24 in Week 3, then skyrocketed to the top five in Week 4.
The team has surely been led by their star player Zach Edey. The center has guided Purdue to become one of the best offenses in the country so far, averaging 22 points and 11 rebounds per game as statistically one of the best rebounders in the country.
Riding on the coattails of Edey, the Boilermakers are surely a tough team to beat.
UConn Huskies are arguably the best team in the nation
As the team's home court announcer would say, "Ladies and gentlemen, the UConn Huskies are the best in the country!" Cue the mic drop.
Despite Houston Cougars basketball being currently ranked as the best team in the nation and the Huskies as No. 5, UConn are currently the nation’s only 10–0 team.
With their elite talent, physicality, and toughness, the Huskies have won every game so far this season by double digits, with their last five wins against major opponents – three on neutral courts, one at home, and one on the road.
The Huskies have yet to trail in the final quarter of their showdowns, and have won every game by an average margin of 18 points.
While it's important for teams not to peak too early, if the NCAA tournament was today, UConn would certainly win it all.
With so much time left this basketball season, more surprises will surely bubble up as we surge into month two.
