College basketball: Duke dominates all game long at home to beat Army
Durham, North Carolina - The Duke Blue Devils played in their second-straight home game to open the NCAA basketball season, hosting the Army Black Knights in a one-sided matchup.
The Blue Devils blew out the Black Knights 82-56 on Friday night for their second-straight win so far to open the year at a perfect 2-0.
Ninth-ranked Duke came into this game off of their season-opening win against the Kentucky Wildcats, carrying loads of momentum against unranked Army, who also won their opener.
The Blue Devils came out hot in the first half, hitting a 10-0 lead before the Knights finally got on the scoreboard.
Duke stayed in control throughout the game and never trailed, despite Army getting close to tying on several occasions.
The Knights had trouble playing disciplined basketball, committing 21 turnovers that in effect helped Duke keep them down.
Army also suffered through a bad night of shooting, hitting only 39% of their overall attempts from the field, including a dismal 5 of 22 from three-point distance.
The player spotlight
Junior forward Wendell Moore Jr. (20) was the hot man for Duke, leading his team in scoring.
He’s been the source of veteran leadership as the Blue Devils begin a run to a potential Final Four appearance.
Playing the most minutes, he put out the kind of performance that was tops on the stat sheet with his first triple-double of the season.
Moore Jr. shot 7-for-13, 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
The big picture
The Blue Devils have a handful of games to sharpen things up before they face last season’s national championship runner-up, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who are currently ranked number one in the country.
If Duke can keep posting wins like this one from Friday night, they’ll find themselves vying for the top rank in the country in no time.
On Saturday, the Blue Devils will play host to the Campbell Fighting Camels while the Black Knights take on the Hartford Hawks.
