Tennessee Titans' Derrick Henry is ruled out for the season indefinitely
Nashville, Tennessee – The Tennessee Titans will be without their star running back in Derrick Henry for an indefinite amount of time due to an ankle injury.
The injury was sustained by Henry during the first quarter of the team's 34-31 overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
Despite the injury, Henry (27) continued to play in the game after receiving treatment on the sideline. The Titans' head coach Mike Vrabel (46) said that although there were discussions about pulling him from the game, they inevitably opted to keep him in.
During a press conference on Monday morning, Vrabel said that Henry would be out indefinitely, and also shared that the running back would be getting ankle surgery Tuesday morning.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Titans were most concerned that Henry's ankle injury was a Jones fracture, which would require surgery and ultimately end his season. However, Vrabel didn't offer up details on the specificity of the injury.
"We found out after the game that there was an issue, and the issue's gonna need to be fixed," Vrabel said, while adding, "I'm not going to put any expectations on any sort of timeline," in regard to Henry's return to the field.
In the wake of the former Alabama running back's injury, the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Titans were eying out veteran running back Adrian Peterson (36) to fill his spot.
The head coach refused to comment on the speculation about Peterson covering for Henry, but he did acknowledge his skill set as a player.
"We've played against Adrian, and you know, obviously he's got a pretty strong and solid resume," Vrabel said.
Paterson is currently a free agent. He played one season with the Detroit Lions in 2020 after being released by the Washington Football Team in September 2020, where he played for two seasons.
Though Henry has yet to comment on his injury or the journey ahead, Vrabel noted at the press conference that the running back was dedicated to making a quick and full recovery.
