NFL: Colts new quarterback Wentz could be out for a long time after foot surgery
Westfield, Indiana - Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz is on the mend, as a broken bone forces surgery and a wait time of 5-12 weeks.
Wentz (28) was just getting his feet wet with the Colts when a previously broken bone in his left foot came loose, sidelining him at least until week two or three of the regular season. At worst though, he could be out until mid-November.
This is disappointing news for all parties involved, as Wentz was looking for a new football life and seemed to have found it in Indianapolis, after growing apart from his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s unfortunately been bitten by the injury bug before as well, tearing his ACL in 2017, as the Eagles went on to their first Super Bowl championship. Several minor injuries here and there left him with only two out of five seasons played from start to finish without a stint on the IR list.
The Colts were definitely looking for a young but experienced quarterback to take the place of the recently retired Phillip Rivers, and it seemed that they found just what they were looking for in Wentz.
Race for the quarterback position heats up
"It's an old injury, possibly from high school, and a broken bone came loose in Wentz's foot," Colts head coach Frank Reich told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He also added that the injury seemed to occur when he planted his foot during a throwing maneuver in this past Thursday’s practice session in the Colts’ ongoing training camp.
There are four other quarterbacks on Indy’s roster who can step up in Wentz’s absence. Sam Ehlinger, Jacob Eason, Jalen Morton, and Brett Hundley can all get a shot, but only one of them, Hundley, has ever taken a snap in the NFL. So for Colts fan’s sake, these inexperienced passers are going to have to master the playbook and master it quickly.
According to Schefter, Dr. David Porter, an orthopedic foot specialist working with the team, performed the procedure on Wentz this Monday.
