Conor McGregor reveals alarming truth about his injury during UFC 264 fight
Los Angeles, California – On Thursday, Conor McGregor addressed his injury from Saturday's UFC 264 fight one day after being released from the hospital, shocking fans by stating his leg was fractured before stepping foot in the ring.
Days after undergoing surgery on Sunday, Conor McGregor broke his silence on Instagram about his injury with an in-depth revelation, stating that he had multiple stress fractures before he entered the ring on Saturday night.
In the video, McGregor is rolling down the sidewalk on a mobility scooter while explaining he had fractures directly above the ankle in his shin from getting kicked numerous times during training sessions.
According to the athlete, Dana White and the UFC medical staff knew of his injuries before he faced Dustin Poirier on Saturday night.
"They knew I had stress fractures in my leg going into that cage. It was debated about pulling the thing out," McGregor said.
The MMA fighter also explained that it helped him to develop his skill set on the mat, saying some training came as a result of him nursing his ankle, which had been weak for an extended period of time.
On Sunday, the 33-year-old underwent surgery at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles to repair the fractures in his tibia and fibula. McGregor said the surgery was successful, but noted he has a long road to recovery ahead of him.
He was released from the hospital on Wednesday, which was also his 33rd birthday.
The former featherweight and lightweight champion suffered a heartbreaking loss to Poirier in the first round of UFC 264 on Saturday after landing awkwardly on his already-injured left foot when he threw a left hook that missed his opponent.
A UFC doctor called the fight shortly after, and McGregor was carted out of the arena in Las Vegas on a stretcher.
