Caleb Downs, the country's No. 1 high school safety, commits to Crimson Roll Tide!
Hoschton, Georgia - It'll be Sweet Home Alabama for Caleb Downs, one of the most sought out safeties in the nation, who officially committed to Nick Saban's Crimson Tide football program Wednesday afternoon.
Downs, the No. 1 safety in the nation, broke the big news with a live announcement in collaboration with The Player's Tribune on Wednesday afternoon.
Hailing from Mill Creek High School out of Georgia, Downs chose the Crimson Tide over the likes of Notre Dame, reigning national champions, Georgia, and the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are currently top in the 2023 recruiting class rankings.
Downs becomes only the third five-star pledge in Alabama's 2023 class, joining fellow defensive backs Tony Mitchell and Jahlil Hurley as their 15th commit overall.
In his past three high school seasons, Downs recorded a massive 174 tackles, 34 pass breakups, two school records of 14 interceptions, and five defensive touchdowns.
Downs credits his athleticism to his father, Gary, who had a lengthy career in the NFL with the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos, and the Atlanta Falcons. The former running back makes a cameo appearance in his son's announcement video.
Downs' commitment bumps Alabama up to the No. 5 spot in the team recruiting rankings, ahead of Clemson, Oklahoma, and Penn State.
