Brittney Griner's location revealed after weeks of uncertainty

Moscow, Russia - WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner has reportedly been taken to a penal colony in the Mordovia region, Russian authorities revealed on Thursday.

Russian authorities have finally revealed that WNBA star Brittney Griner has been moved to Female Penal Colony IK-2 in Yavas, hundreds of miles southeast of Moscow.

On November 4, the former Phoenix Mercury player was moved from the Moscow detention center to an undisclosed prison location following her nine-year prison sentence in August over drug charges.

For nearly two weeks, no one, including her lawyers, knew where the 32-year-old was as Russian authorities kept her location a secret.

The US State Department also revealed that Russia failed to provide any official information regarding Griner's move, contrary to normal procedures.

Reuters first broke the story that Griner had in fact been sent to Female Penal Colony IK-2 in Yavas, about 300 miles southeast of Moscow.

The facility sits in the same region where fellow American prisoner Paul Whelan is serving a 16-year sentence in a different penal over espionage charges in 2020.

The US and Russia have previously discussed a potential prisoner swap for both Griner and Whelan, but no deal has been made amid the heightened tensions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Inmates of Russian penal colonies are forced to live in harsh and unhygienic conditions, with access to very little medical attention. They're also required to do hard manual labor over grueling hours for little pay.
