A real knockout: this school teacher is fighting for professional boxing titles!
London, UK - This Australian math teacher made it all the way to the top of women's boxing on Saturday night. Though she didn't win, she's setting a new standard for powerful women.
At first glance, Ebanie Bridges is a cheerful – and very beautiful – math teacher. But below the surface is a fighter. When she's not grading papers, Bridges battles it out in the ring, against some of the most powerful women on earth.
The Australian teacher only started boxing at the age of 29. Between her start and until her fight on April 10 a report in the Daily Star has her down for 30 amateur and five professional fights.
The key stat are the five professional bouts because she won all of them – and two of them were straight knock-out.
That was enough proof of her abilities to be able to take a huge step forward in her career. On April 10, Ebanie Bridges challenged Englishwoman Shannon Courtenay (27) for the WBA bantamweight title.
"It was an all action fight from start to finish, it was 100 miles an hour in there," said a commentator for Matchroom Boxing.
"I have to give credit to her because that was a bloody good fight and she was tougher than I thought she was," said her opponent, Shannon Courtenay. "Putting up the performance she just did, I have even more respect for her," Courtenay said at the conclusion of the fight.
Even though the 34-year-old teacher didn't make the cut this time, she's not quitting the ring. Though there's no doubt she will command plenty of respect when she returns to the classroom in between fights.
Bridges Chooses To Wear Sexy Lingerie To The Official Weigh-In
The Australian also causes quite a stir at the official weigh-in before each boxing match. While other boxers usually pose for cameras at the weigh-ins while wearing sweats or sports bras, Ebanie Bridges prefers to wear sexy lace lingerie.
"The Blonde Bomber" is a very accurate nickname for Bridges. A look at her Instagram account, shows that she gained more than 40,000 followers just as a result of her participating in the world championships alone.
Though opponent Shannon Courtenay was previously vocal against Bridges, saying that she was "sexualizing" women's boxing, the two seemed to have been able to resolve things in the ring.
Bridges response to the accusations was simply, "If we can get more people to watch, then Shannon and I can show that women can fight. The reason so many eyes are on this fight is because of me."
