Women's History Month kicks off with a historic first

Washington DC- March is Women's History Month and this year's celebration started off with a historic first: Joe Biden delivered the State of the Union address flanked by not one but two women.

Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sat behind President Joe Biden Tuesday during his State of the Union address.

As NPR noted, this is the first State of the Union address where the President of the United Sates flanked by two women.

It was a fitting first for the first day of Women's History Month, coming hot on the heels of Biden's nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court.

While International Women's Day, held around the world on March 8, has been around for over a century, the first Women's History Month was declared in 1987 as a celebration of women's contributions to history, as well as contemporary culture and society.

Since 1995, Presidents have designated March Women's history month with a Presidential Proclamation, and 2022 was no different.

But Women's History Month doesn't just have a proclamation, it also has a theme. In 2021 the theme was "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced." 2022's theme is "Providing Healing, Promoting Hope."

According to the National Women's History Alliance's website, this theme is "both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history."

This year's event schedule is packed and will be crowned on March 30 with a virtual event awarding the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with a Great Americans Medal for her groundbreaking commitment to gender equity and human rights.
