Jacob Chansley, the conspiracy theorist who brandished a large spear and left a threatening note for then-vice president Mike Pence, will be behind bars for three years and five months.

This is the most severe sentence meted out so far in the insurrection by hundreds of supporters of former president Donald Trump, who ransacked the Capitol building on January 6.

“What you did was terrible. You made yourself the epitome of the riot,” US District Court Judge Royce Lambert told Chansley before imposing his sentence.

Prosecutors had asked the judge to hand out a 51-month prison sentence.

Chansley pleaded for mercy before being sentenced by the judge in Washington.

In addition to his 41-month prison sentence, Chansley was ordered to three years of probation following his release. He will also have to pay $2,000 in restitution.

He expressed remorse for his role in the attack, which he said was inspired by the former president.
