Israel says it will "act aggressively" after Ben & Jerry's ends ice cream sales in Occupied Territories

Jerusalem, Israel – Ben & Jerry's is known for its creative ice cream flavors with even more creative names, but the company has also developed a reputation for its bold political stances.

Ben & Jerry's released a statement on Monday, saying, "We believe it is inconsistent with our values for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to be sold in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT)."

They also said they would not be renewing their license agreement with their manufacturer in Israel after it expires in 2022.

The ice cream maker added, "Although Ben & Jerry’s will no longer be sold in the OPT, we will stay in Israel through a different arrangement." It is not yet clear what the new set-up will entail.

The decision came after Israel has come under increasing scrutiny following an eruption of violence in May that left over 250 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead. Israel has also engaged in settlement expansion in the West Bank and the forced seizure of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, and state security forces have been documented brutally attacking Palestinian residents.

Just three days into the Naftali Bennett administration, Israel bombed Gaza again, violating the ceasefire agreement.

Israel responds to Ben & Jerry's announcement

Unsurprisingly, the Israeli government didn't take kindly to the recent news, with the new far-right Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Tuesday vowing to "act aggressively" against Ben & Jerry's, according to the Associated Press.

Israel's ambassador to the US, Gilad Erdan, has reached out to 35 state governors and urged them to punish Ben & Jerry's under anti-boycott laws.

Erdan accused the ice cream company of "de-facto adoption of anti-Semitic practices and advancement of the de-legitimization of the Jewish state and the dehumanization of the Jewish people."

Meanwhile, in the US, many kosher grocery stores are removing Ben & Jerry's from their shelves, CNN reported.
