India Walton joins calls to remove Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown from DNC post

Buffalo, New York – India Walton, the Democratic socialist who lit up the Buffalo mayoral race, has echoed calls for her top challenger, Byron Brown, to be removed from his position on the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

After winning the Democratic primary for Buffalo mayor in July, Walton conceded the race to Brown last Wednesday, ending a campaign that inspired voters not only in Buffalo, but across the nation.

Brown, the four-term incumbent, won reelection after launching a write-in campaign despite losing the Democratic primary.

With the financial backing of wealthy and GOP donors, he was able to edge out Walton in the general election on November 2.

Democratic leaders in New York, by and large, refrained from throwing their support behind the legitimate nominee, with the state Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs even comparing Walton, a Black woman, to a former grand wizard of the KKK.

Now, progressives are calling on Democratic leadership to take a stand against what happened in Buffalo by removing Brown from his role at the DNC.

"When you pull a stunt like this, somebody wins a primary, a working-class woman, and you go to every rich donor in both parties to fund a write-in campaign … it’s a disgrace," said Our Revolution Chair and DNC member Larry Cohen.

India Walton herself has also weighed in the campaign to remove Brown, telling Politico, "Not only do I support the DNC revoking Byron Brown's post; I believe it would set a dangerous precedent not to."

Calling Brown a "good Democrat," Jay Jacobs told progressives they need to "move on" and give up on their attempts to have Brown stripped of his leadership position within the party.

"It’s not going to go anywhere," he said. "I’m used to people throwing bombs, and fortunately, most times they are to no effect."

Jacobs on Monday once again defended his decision not to back Walton: "There was no Republican on the ballot, so there was no threat of splitting the vote for the benefit of Republicans."

New York Democratic strategist Stu Loeser, who previously worked for Senator Chuck Schumer, said, "Why would we kick Mayor Brown off the DNC? He’s proven he can win tough races."

Both had nothing to say about the huge sums of Republican money that went into Brown's victory.

Progressives know the attempt to remove Brown from the DNC is a long shot, with Cohen himself admitting, "You’re not likely going to see [Chair] Jaime Harrison at the DNC or anybody at the White House… do one thing."

Nevertheless, he insisted he would "try to organize something, and so will a lot of other people."
