Cori Bush speaks out against treatment of Haitian migrants after her team's visit to Del Rio

Del Rio, Texas – Missouri Representative Cori Bush's team visited Del Rio over the weekend to investigate the treatment of Haitian migrants at the US-Mexico border.

Bush said that as a member of the House Oversight Committee, she has a "duty to investigate our government's actions."

That's why her team visited Del Rio, Texas, over the weekend to see the site where around 17,000 Haitian asylum seekers were camping just one week prior.

The encampment has since been emptied, but not before the Biden administration faced fierce backlash over deporting migrants to Haiti.

The controversy intensified after brutal images of border patrol officers on horseback appearing to whip Black migrants with their reins were released.

Bush refuses to let the issue drop and described her team's findings in a Twitter thread.

She started by calling out a policy enacted during the Trump years, which has allowed the Biden administration to deport Haitians without giving them the opportunity to apply for asylum.

"We truly do not know where all of these individuals ended up. Some were sent to different camps. Some were deported. We are demanding answers," she wrote.

Bush continued to describe reports on the migrants' living conditions at the camp: "We heard from an asylum seeker that the conditions felt like death. Children were vomiting. The air was so dusty that people were suffocating. And there was little to no access to health care."

"It was clear from every conversation: Migrants were treated like a PR nightmare, not asylum seekers," she said.

"Brutalizing and disappearing asylum seekers is a violation of international law."

Through her position on the House Oversight Committee, Bush promised to continue fighting for truth and change in the treatment of Haitian migrants.
