Conservative Oregon counties vote to secede to Idaho!
Oregon – Residents in five conservative, rural Oregon counties voted on Tuesday to secede to the state of Idaho.
Oregon's Malheur, Sherman, Grant, Baker, and Lake counties have joined Jefferson and Union counties in calls to become part of Idaho, The Hill reported.
While most of Oregon supported Biden by significant margins in 2020, the counties in question voted 69% to 79% in favor of Trump. Their decision to secede highlights the rural-urban political divide visible across much of the United States.
Mike McCarter, head of the conservative group Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho, said, "This election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon. If Oregon really believes in liberal values such as self-determination, the Legislature won’t hold our counties captive against our will."
"If we’re allowed to vote for which government officials we want, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well," he continued.
But moving state lines isn't that simple. In fact, it's only been done three times in American history in the cases of Kentucky (1792), Maine (1820), and West Virginia (1863).
Republican Idaho Governor Brad Little said he would welcome Oregon citizens into his state borders, but before that's possible, the Democratic-led Oregon state legislature would have to approve the move. Then the US Congress would have to sign off on an agreement between the two states.
Two more Oregon counties, Douglas and Harney, are expected to hold a similar vote in the future.
