Biden administration launches mass deportation campaign for Haitian migrants in Texas

Del Rio, Texas – The Biden administration has launched a series of mass deportations to repatriate Haitian migrants at the Texas-Mexico border.

Over 12,000 migrants, many of whom are Haitian, have been camped at Del Rio, a Texas border town.

But that could soon change, as 320 migrants were deported to Haiti on three flights on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.

Six more deportation flights are planned for Tuesday and seven for Wednesday. Several flights per day from San Antonio, and perhaps also El Paso, are expected to continue after that point.

Normally, migrants are permitted to apply for asylum upon entering the US. But Haitians are now being deported under Title 42, a Trump-era policy that repatriates migrants without the possibility of seeking asylum according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) coronavirus guidelines.

Haitians cannot wait on the other side of the border, as Mexico allows migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras – but not Haiti – to remain in the country while they seek asylum.

Yael Schacher, a senior advocate at Refugees International, said the current flights constitute the largest-scale deportation program since 1992, when the US Coast Guard launched an interception campaign for Haitian migrants at sea.

Progressives call on Biden administration to stop deportations

The Biden administration has already faced criticism for deporting Haitians to a country reeling from the effects of a presidential assassination, devastating earthquake, and other climate disasters.

Guerline Jozef, executive director of Haitian Bridge Alliance, told CBS, "The reality is that Haiti is drowning in a pool of man-made and natural disasters. Instead of throwing them a lifeline, we're making sure that they drown."

On Thursday, Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Nydia Velázquez, together with 54 other lawmakers, penned a letter to the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra calling for an end to Haitian deportations.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman has since called the renewed deportations "unethical and inhumane," while fellow New York Congressman Mondaire Jones said they were "absolutely unacceptable."

Senator Ed Markey tweeted, "Haiti is still reeling from COVID, political instability, a recent earthquake, and tropical storm. We should be focused on a humanitarian effort, not deporting people back to an unstable environment."

So far, it seems progressive calls to stop deportations are falling on deaf ears.
