Bernie Sanders endorses Jessica Cisneros in Texas primary race!
Laredo, Texas - South Texas progressive Jessica Cisneros racked up another big endorsement on Monday in her campaign for Congress – this time from none other than the OG Bernie Sanders himself.
Sanders has thrown his weight behind Jessica Cisneros, a Democratic candidate in the primary for the Texas-28 congressional district.
Cisneros is running to unseat Blue Dog Democrat Henry Cuellar, whose home and campaign office were recently raided by the FBI, reportedly over the congressman's alleged ties to Azerbaijan.
The 28-year-old Laredo native has already received an endorsement from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who appeared at a rally with her and Texas-35 candidate Greg Casar in San Antonio on Saturday.
In addition to AOC, Reps. Jamaal Bowman, Ayanna Pressley, and Katie Porter as well as Sen. Elizabeth Warren have added their support to Cisneros' campaign.
On Monday, Sanders joined that list. He previously endorsed Cisneros in 2020, the first time she ran to unseat Cuellar. She narrowly lost that primary race by just three percentage points.
"Jessica knows that real change comes from the bottom on up, not the top on down," the Vermont senator said in a statement, as reported by The Hill.
"She will fight for the working class in Congress and together we will build a movement to transform this nation so that it works for all our people."
"I am honored to have the support of Bernie Sanders in this grassroots campaign to deliver for working families," Cisneros said in response to the announcement. "We’re taking on Cuellar’s Republican corporate backers with a positive vision for South Texas which includes delivering on Medicare for All, reproductive freedom, and good-paying union jobs."
The Texas primaries are set to take place on March 1.
