AOC says conservative Supreme Court justices should be impeached

Washington DC - New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday said Supreme Court justices who lied during confirmation hearings about their stance on Roe v. Wade should be impeached.

AOC told NBC's Meet the Press that conservative justices who "misled" senators and the public should be held accountable.

"I believe lying under oath is an impeachable offense," the congresswoman said.

"If we allow Supreme Court nominees to lie under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue – without basis, if you read these opinions – rulings that deeply undermine the human civil rights of the majority of Americans, we must see that through," she explained.

"There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and the hostile takeover of our democratic institutions."

Conservative justices come under fire

AOC's comments came just days after the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark 1973 decision that effectively guaranteed the right to an abortion.

Conservative justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett have come under fire for denying that they would overturn Roe during their Senate confirmation hearings, or avoiding a direct answer to the question.

"What makes it particularly dangerous is that it sends a blaring signal to all future nominees that they can now lie to duly elected members of the United States Senate in order to secure a Supreme Court confirmation," AOC said.
