UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson marries long-time fiancee in secret wedding
London, UK – UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson married his fiancee Carrie Symonds in a secret ceremony on Saturday.
The lovebirds, who had been engaged since 2019, finally sealed the deal in front of just 30 guests, who were invited late notice to the service at Westminster Cathedral.
Boris Johnson (56) became the first prime minister since 1822 to get married while in office, Politico reported.
His 33-year-old wife Carrie Johnson (née Symonds) comes from a family of prominent UK journalists. She previously worked as head of communications for the UK Conservative Party and currently serves as a senior advisor to Oceana, an ocean conservation charity.
Before becoming Johnson's third wife, she was the first unmarried partner to reside at the prime minister's official Downing Street residence.
During that time, the pair came under fire for allegedly using Conservative Party donations to redecorate the Downing Street home. The controversy centered around wallpaper costing about $1,200 per roll, which Symonds reportedly selected.
There were also questions around the twice-divorced Johnson being able to re-marry in a Catholic ceremony, something that the church doesn't usually allow. Austin Ivereigh, the biographer of Pope Francis, explained that the prime minister's previous marriages were probably not recognized by Catholic canonical law.
The Johnsons are expected to make their first public appearance as husband and wife at the G7 summit in June.
