Mondale, a Democrat, served as Vice President under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981.

According to Axios, Mondale revolutionized the role, becoming the first VP to have an office in the White House. He was also deeply involved in foreign policy and worked closely with the president.

In a statement on Mondale's passing, Carter called his former partner "the best vice president in our country's history."

In 1984, Mondale ran for president, losing heavily to Ronald Reagan. At the time, he became the first presidential nominee to select a female VP candidate, Geraldine Ferraro, as his running mate.

Mondale was also a Minnesota senator from 1964 to 1976 and Bill Clinton's ambassador to Japan.

Several politicians spoke with Mondale before his passing

The current president saw Mondale as a mentor throughout his political career.

In fact, Joe Biden said the first call he made after Barack Obama asked him to be his running mate in 2008 was to Mondale, who gave him advice on the role.

Tom Cosgrove, a former campaign staffer, said Mondale knew his death was approaching and had received phone calls on Sunday from President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Jimmy Carter, former President Bill Clinton, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
