Netflix CEO donates huge sum to defeat California governor's recall
Sacramento, California – Netflix founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings is apparently a big fan of California Governor Gavin Newsom – and he's putting his money where his mouth is.
According to Politico, Hastings is giving $3 million to efforts to beat recall efforts against the Democratic governor. He is by far the largest donor to the campaign.
Newsom is set to become only the second governor in California history to face a recall election after the Republican-led initiative gathered enough signatures to appear on the ballot. The vote is expected to take place in fall 2021, one year before the governor stands for reelection.
Because the recall is being treated as a ballot measure, there are no limits on the size of donations Newsom can receive.
Other gubernatorial candidates in the 2022 race have campaign limits capped at $32,400 in their direct accounts.
Silicon Valley tech leaders have already signed a letter in support of Newsom.
With Hastings' investment, the embattled governor has proven his ability to muster large sums from a wealthy Democratic donor base.
