UPDATE, October 28, 5:28 PM EST: Paul Pelosi undergoes surgery after hammer attack
New harrowing details have emerged about the assault on Paul Pelosi, who is said to recovering from surgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for head and facial injuries sustained from being hit with a hammer.
The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old David Depape, who broken into the home and allegedly asked "Where's Nancy? Where's Nancy?" according to NBC Bay Area. Paul Pelosi apparently managed to call 911 when Depape wasn’t looking.
The assailant then tried to tie up Pelosi "until Nancy got home," and when officers arrived at the scene to perform a welfare check, he said, "We are waiting for Nancy."
He then attacked Pelosi with a hammer he was holding in front of officers, who disarmed and detained him.
President Biden is "praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family," said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. "This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected."
"The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected," she added.
This article was amended after a previous version incorrectly reported that Paul Pelosi underwent brain surgery.
