Nancy Pelosi gives first comments after violent attack on her husband Paul

San Francisco, California - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has issued her first comments following the violent attack on her husband in a letter to members of the House of Representatives.

Speaker Pelosi's husband, Paul, was attacked by an intruder at the couple's San Francisco home on Friday morning.

The 82-year-old underwent brain surgery after the attack and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Yesterday morning, a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul," Pelosi said in the letter. "Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop."

The 82-year-old expressed her gratitude for the swift response from first responders and thanked medical professionals for the "life-saving care" they are providing her husband.

"Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery," she said. "His condition continues to improve."

Police have identified 42-year-old David Depape as the suspect in the attack.

Per CNN, the assailant faces multiple felony charges, including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, and burglary.
