Kevin McCarthy vows to kick notable Democrats to the curb if named House Speaker

Washington DC - Kevin McCarthy, the Republican nominee hoping to take over Nancy Pelosi's position of House Speaker, said that if he wins, he will make sure that Democratic leaders Eric Swalwell, Adam Schiff, and Ilhan Omar are barred from certain committees.

During an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, McCarthy laid out his grievances with each of his fellow politicians.

In December 2020, California representative Eric Swalwell was alerted by the FBI that a woman he had been working with was actually a Chinese spy. Though Swalwell said he was "shocked" by the news, McCarthy believes it serves as grounds to have him barred.

"One thing I said from the very beginning, Eric Swalwell cannot get a security clearance in the public sector," McCarthy explained. "Why would we ever give him a security clearance and the secrets to America? So, I will not allow him to be on [the House Intelligence Committee]."

Adam Schiff, who also represents California, worked on both impeachment trials of former president Donald Trump, who McCarthy has been a steadfast supporter of, and is also on the January 6 committee investigating Trump's involvement with the Capitol riots.

"You have Adam Schiff," McCarthy said, "who lied to the American public time and again – we will not allow him to be on the [Intelligence] Committee either."

Ilhan Omar received backlash in 2019 for comments she made online that were critical of Israel, which some have argued pushed an antisemitic narrative.

McCarthy said of Ilhan, "Look at Congresswoman Omar, her antisemitic comments that have gone forward. We're not going to allow her to be on Foreign Affairs."

Ilhan Omar posted a statement to Twitter on Monday, arguing that McCarthy's threat is an attempt to "gin up fear and hate" against anyone who shares her identity.

"From the moment I was elected, the Republican Party has made it their mission to use fear, xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism to target me on the House floor and through millions of dollars of campaign ads," she explained.

She later added, "McCarthy’s effort to repeatedly single me out for scorn and hatred – including threatening to strip me from my committee – does nothing to address the issues our constituents deal with."

US Representative-elect Greg Casar of Texas shared similar sentiments in a tweet, accusing McCarthy of "singling out the only Muslim on the committee," and "stoking extremism and division."

Congressman Robert Garcia also pointed to McCarthy's hypocrisy, asking the politician in a tweet, "

Adam Schiff responded during an interview on ABC's This Week, stating, "I suspect [McCarthy] will do whatever Marjorie Taylor Greene wants him to do.

"He is a very weak leader of his conference," he added, "meaning that he will adhere to the wishes of the lowest common denominator. And if that lowest common denominator wants to remove people from committees, that’s what they'll do."

When Eric Swalwell was asked by NBC News about the threat, he responded, "Talk to me if Kevin McCarthy becomes speaker."

Kevin McCarthy wouldn't have the power as House Speaker to remove them on his own, and would need to gain a majority vote from the House to make it happen.
