Trump seeks $475 million from CNN for "racist" and "cult leader" labels
Plantation, Florida - Donald Trump put his money where his mouth is on Monday by suing CNN for defamation, and he's asking for a hefty chunk of change to make matters right.
The former president reportedly expressed his desire to sue CNN over the summer, and it looks like he's actually following through.
According to a lawsuit that was filed on Monday in a federal court in Florida, Trump is claiming that CNN "has sought to use its massive influence – purportedly as a 'trusted' news source – to defame [Trump] in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically."
The docs continued to argue that "CNN has tried to taint [Trump] with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of 'racist,' 'Russian lackey,' 'insurrectionist,' and ultimately 'Hitler,'" labels that Trump's lawyers claim were "repeatedly reported as true fact" by the news outlet.
Additionally, the former president's legal team stated: "CNN has undertaken a smear campaign to malign [Trump] with a barrage of negative associations and innuendos, broadcasting commentary that he is like a cult leader, a Russian lackey, a dog whistler to white supremacists, and a racist."
To make matters right, Trump is asking CNN to pay him $475 million in punitive damages. He is represented by James M. Trusty and Lindsey Halligan. CNN has yet to comment on the defamation suit.
Trump's defamation lawsuit is the latest legal battle the former president has added to his plate.
