Trump Organization was in hot water in court ahead of tax fraud trial

New York, New York - A newly unsealed court order shows that the Trump Organization was held in criminal contempt and fined thousands of dollars back in October 2021, ahead of its recent major tax fraud trial.

According to The New York Times, a secret one-day trial was held before last month's trial, and revealed that former president Donald Trump and his businesses failed to cooperate with the investigation on several occasions.

A ruling by Manhattan criminal court judge Juan Merchan, which was unsealed on Tuesday, found the Trump Organization in criminal contempt, meaning they displayed open disobedience to the court.

Merchan fined the organization $4,000 for "willfully disobeying four Grand Jury subpoenas," and failure to "produce responsive documents without explanation."

"Despite clear warnings, the Company missed deadline after deadline, never moving to quash subpoenas and never seeking Court intervention," the order stated. "Some subpoenas went largely ignored and another was ignored entirely."

The company's bombshell tax fraud trial wrapped up last week with the Trump Organization being convicted for multiple tax-related offenses, including falsifying business records. The consequence of the guilty verdict is a fine of $1.76 million.

While Trump, some of his family, and closest confidants evaded convictions directly, prosecutors continue to argue that Trump was fully aware of the crimes taking place within his company.

Donald Trump still faces other legal battles, including multiple government investigations and a trial over classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
