Top prosecutors investigating Trump resign from Manhattan DA office
New York, New York - Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz, the two prosecutors leading the Manhattan district attorney's investigation into former president Donald Trump's business dealings, resigned on Wednesday.
The announcement comes after a month of silence from the investigation, which was expected to bring evidence before a grand jury.
According to the New York Times, New York distract attorney Alvin Bragg had recently expressed doubts about moving forward with the case.
It is unclear exactly why the prosecutors have stepped down, but it has caused widespread speculation about what it means for the future of the probe.
Danielle Filson, Communications Director for the DA's office, told CNBC, "We are grateful for their service. The investigation is ongoing. We can’t comment further."
Last week, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled that the former president, his son Trump Jr., and his daughter Ivanka must comply with demands for documents and must give testimony in a separate fraud case led by attorney general Letitia James.
The Trump Organization has been under investigation for questionable business dealings for several years, but Trump has yet to be officially charged with a crime. His lawyers have argued that prosecutors "targeted Donald Trump's associates and companies for investigation and prosecution based on their animus toward his speech and political views."
More information on the reasons for the resignations will hopefully come to light as the investigation continues to develop.
