Texas Governor Greg Abbott secures a big endorsement for reelection
Austin, Texas – After the close of one of the most conservative Texas legislative sessions in decades, incumbent Governor Greg Abbott has picked up a big endorsement for reelection.
None other than ex-President Donald Trump has formally expressed his support for the Republican governor's reelection bid, the Texas Tribune reported.
In the Tuesday announcement, distributed by the Save America PAC, Trump praised the governor: "Greg Abbott is a fighter and a Great Governor for the incredible people of Texas."
"Governor Greg Abbott will continue to be a great leader for the Lone Star State, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for re-election. He will never let you down!" the statement continued.
Just two days after Texas Democrats walked out of the Capitol, blocking the governor's priority restrictive voting bill, Trump said Abbott was "all in on Election Integrity." Abbott has already announced that he will hold a special session for the voting bill and threatened to cut the state's legislative budget over the walkout.
Trump also praised Abbott for making Texas a "Second Amendment Sanctuary State" and "support[ing] the brave men and women of Law Enforcement."
Despite the endorsement, Republican challenger and former state Sen. Don Huffines insists he is the "clear Trump candidate in the Texas governor's race." In a statement, he said, "Texas Primary voters and Trump supporters will decide for themselves who will lead our state forward, and who has failed Texans repeatedly on issues that matter the most."
Abbott thanked Trump on Twitter, calling the ex-president a "great friend of Texas."
Texas' incumbent Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick already secured Trump's endorsement for his own reelection campaign earlier this month.
