Donald Trump banned from holding Fourth of July rally at Battleship Park

Mobile, Alabama – A rally set to be held at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park featuring former President Donald J. Trump has been banned by the park, citing partisan and political concerns.

Those who were hoping to see the former president speak in Mobile, Alabama over the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend might be packing their bags to Sarasota, after the rally Trump intended on speaking at was scrapped.

Plans for the rally were tossed by the USS Alabama Battleship Commission after concerns arose regarding the type of event that was to be held.

One of the commission chairs, Bill Tunnell, told WPTV that soon after the rally request was made, members of the Republican Party reached out to the commission, which raised many red flags.

"After the request was made, then there was contact with the Republican Party. They contacted us, and then it became apparent that it was going to be a partisan political event rather than just a patriotic event planned for that evening," Tunnell said.

The last time Battleship Park was used for a political event was in 2012 by former presidential candidate Rick Santorum.

Tunnell recalled the 2012 rally as being the "straw that broke the camel's back" in regard to hosting political events at the park.

Trump's rally was supposed to take place on Saturday, July 3, and was set to include an extravagant display of fireworks in celebration of Independence Day.

While the context of Trump's talking points were never divulged, the commission ultimately ruled to ban the event from taking place over fears that the former president would stray from Fourth of July commentary and make it political.

Rather than canceling the event altogether, organizers moved the rally from Mobile, Alabama to the Sarasota Fairgrounds in Sarasota, Florida on July 3.
