Donald Trump backtracks fast after judge trashes "frivolous" lawsuit and orders him to pay
West Palm Beach, Florida - Donald Trump took another hit as he and his lawyer were ordered to pay nearly a million dollars for bringing a ridiculous lawsuit against Hillary Clinton. That, in turn, made the former president abandon another legal action.
Federal Judge Donald Middlebrooks of the Southern District of Florida on Thursday released a 46-page decision that blasted Trump and his lawyer for the "completely frivolous" lawsuit that was "brought in bad faith for an improper purpose."
"Mr. Trump is a prolific and sophisticated litigant who is repeatedly using the courts to seek revenge on political adversaries," Middlebrooks wrote. "He is the mastermind of strategic abuse of the judicial process, and he cannot be seen as a litigant blindly following the advice of a lawyer."
Trump and his legal team filed the suit nearly a year ago against Clinton, Justice Department officials, and others, alleging they all conspired against him to keep him from winning the 2016 presidential elections, which he won anyway.
"No reasonable lawyer would have filed it," he continued. "Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim."
Both Trump and his lawyer Alina Habba are ordered to pay $938,000 to cover the legal fees for all the defendants in the case.
Trump drops lawsuit against Letitia James
Judge Middlebrooks scathing takedown seems to have had an effect beyond the Clinton lawsuit.
On Friday morning, Trump reportedly withdrew his lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James, whom he sued in November last year for allegedly trying to "steal, destroy or control all things Trump" by prosecuting the Trump organization's shady business dealings.
Guardian reporter Hugo Lowell explained the sudden U-turn in a tweet: "The problem for Trump was that US district court judge Middlebrooks, who last night issued $1m sanction for Trump v. Clinton et al, was also overseeing Trump v. James – and referenced Trump v. James as example of vexatious litigation in the Clinton case."
The civil action lawsuit launched by James is still pending, but the Trump Organization was found guilty last week of tax fraud and other charges in a separate legal action.
