Donald Trump is officially back on Facebook and Instagram
Menlo Park, California - Meta has officially restored the Facebook and Instagram accounts of former president Donald Trump, after he was suspended "indefinitely" following the January 6 Capitol riots.
According to the BBC, Trump's accounts were reinstated on Thursday, after having been suspended for over two years.
Meta announced two weeks ago that they were planning to restore the accounts in the "coming weeks."
Nick Clegg, Facebook's president of global affairs, said the public "should be able to hear what their politicians are saying – the good, the bad, and the ugly," and argued that Trump's account no longer poses a threat to public safety.
Trump was dropped from the platforms for making baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, and praising those who "engaged in violence at the Capitol."
Initially, Trump was suspended indefinitely, but after the company's Oversight Board criticized the decision, it was changed to two years.
Trump's 2024 president campaign sent a letter to Meta requesting his account to be restored, but it is unclear if they plan to actually use it.
In November, Twitter and CEO Elon Musk also restored the former president's account, but he still has yet to use the account, preferably using his platform Truth Social that he created out of spite.
Donald Trump's Facebook currently has 34 million followers, while his Instagram has over 23 million.
