According to a statement by the Huntington Park Police Department, officers responded to an emergency call regarding a stabbing in the 2400 block of Slauson Avenue around 3:40 PM on Thursday.

Upon arrival, they found a victim with "a life-threatening stab wound resulting in a collapsed lung and internal bleeding." The victim described suffering the injury from a suspect in a wheelchair, pointing officers in the direction he fled.

Officers tracked down the assumed suspect, Anthony Lowe Jr. (36), and attempted to detain him. The statement said Lowe Jr. ignored their commands, and threatened them with a 12-inch butcher knife used in the stabbing.

"Officers deployed two separate Tasers in an attempt to subdue the suspect, but the Tasers were ineffective," the statement read. "The suspect continued to threaten officers with the butcher knife, resulting in an officer-involved shooting."

Officers fired ten rounds at Lowe, hitting him in the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cell phone footage of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing the officers pursue Lowe as he is limping on both stumps in an attempt to flee. The officers are seen with their guns drawn, but the fatal shooting was not caught in the video.

Unfortunately, the Huntington Park Police Department does not use body cams, so the cell phone footage is the closest thing to evidence there is.

What's the real story behind Anthony Lowe Jr.'s fatal shooting by police?

Anthony Lowe Jr. was a father of two and was one of eight siblings.

"I'm heartbroken, and filled with anger and rage," Tatiana Jackson, Lowe's younger sister, explained to the Guardian. "I just can't understand why they would do that to someone in a wheelchair. I want somebody to explain to me what was the reason that you had to gun down a guy who has no legs."

Members of Lowe's family have argued that officers escalated the situation, resorting to lethal force which did not need to be used.

"He was running away from them as if he was scared for his life," said Ebonique Simon, the mother of one of Anthony's children. "This could have been handled in any other way. But they chose gunfire as the resolution to the problem. That is insane…"

"The police are supposed to be upholding the law, and we're supposed to trust them with our lives," she added, "but how can we, if they do something like this?"

There has also been scrutiny surrounding the story from the department, who have adamantly tried to paint Lowe as violent and dangerous, stating that officers feared for their lives. The department originally claimed Lowe attempted to "throw the knife at the officers," only to be rescinded later by a spokesperson.

"They thought this man had no family and that they could sweep this story under the rug. But I’m not going to let it go until there is justice for my son," Ebonique Simon said, referring to her and Anthony Lowe Jr.'s 15-year-old.

"How is a child going to feel about police now that you’ve gunned their father down?"
