New York, New York - New York's Mayor Eric Adams officially signed a new law on Tuesday that designates Times Square as a gun-free zone.

In his ongoing effort to fight gun crime and clean up the mean streets of NYC, Mayor Adams is now going tackling gun safety head on with the new Intro 602-A law.

"Today we enshrine in law that Times Square is a gun-free zone," Adams stated at a press conference . "Licensed gun carriers and others may not enter this area with a gun unless otherwise specifically authorized by law, but we’re not stopping here."

He also signed another bill, Intro 518-A, that will track data on illegal gun trafficking in the city.

In a Twitter post, he says the two bills "will help us dam the rivers that are feeding the sea of gun violence in our city." The new restrictions also apply to legal gun owners.

The move comes only a week after federal judge Glenn Suddaby put holds on parts of the Concealed Carry Improvement Act, a law recently put forth by governor Kathy Hochul which bans possession of concealed firearms in some places and makes background checks for concealed carry licenses more strict. Suddaby argued that he found aspects of the bill to be "unconstitutional."

The city began putting up "Gun Free Zone" signs in Times Square in August after local lawmakers banned firearms in the Crossroads of the World. The ban by City Council followed the Supreme Court's decision to gut the state’s concealed carry handgun law in June.

While it's not an absolute end to gun violence, mayor Eric Adam's is taking big steps to curb the problem in NYC.
