Infamous LA mountain lion gets captured after killing a chihuahua
Los Angeles, California - A famous mountain lion known to LA residents as P-22 was taken into captivity after it attacked a dog in the Hollywood Hills.
The wild feline, who is believed to be 11 years old, was discovered in the backyard of a Los Feliz home in LA on Monday.
Wildlife officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and National Park Service (NPS) managed to tranquilize the cat and transported it to a local wild animal care facility.
According to CNN, security camera footage caught the moment P-22 attacked a chihuahua named Piper while the pup was on a walk with their owner back in November.
On December 8, the CDFW and NPS announced plans to capture the cat for a health evaluation "after being deemed responsible for killing a leashed pet last month."
Now that the evaluation is underway, the NPS says the lion's condition is stable, and he will undergo additional veterinary evaluation.
P-22, also known to locals as "Hollywood Cat," has made Griffith Park its home for years. Wildlife officials attached a GPS tracking device to the cat to monitor his whereabouts, and he has since become something of a local celebrity.
After the health evaluation of P-22, "CDFW veterinarians and NPS biologists will determine the best next steps for the animal while also prioritizing the safety of the surrounding communities."
