Texas tattoo addict faces blindness to pursue her biggest passion
El Paso, Texas – Sarah Sabbath has an unwavering love for ink, even though it left her with potentially permanent eye damage!
At the young age of 14, Sabbath got her first tattoo. It wasn't long after that she realized she had found her newest obsession in the art of ink.
After being bullied in high school for having a lot of body hair, she turned to tattoos in search of self acceptance and a side of confidence.
"For me, it was kind of a way to find myself, and the pain that I endured made me feel stronger about myself, so it made me, I feel like, a better person," the 26-year-old told Truly.
Over the last 12 years, Sabbath has spent $3,000 on tattoos, including getting her eyeballs inked.
There is always a risk of blindness when getting eye tattoos, but they've been rising in popularity and more people are getting them done without complications.
But Sabbath was an unfortunate exception – she left the studio almost blind and with permanent damage.
A method to the madness
Eye tattoos are typically done by mixing saline solution with ink to dilute it, making it more runny. Unfortunately for the Texan, the tattoo artist that didn't put enough saline solution into the mix, and proceeded to buzz the ink into her eyes.
"I had a very difficult time doing anything. I could not watch TV, I didn't like being around bright lights, I didn't like being outside. I got very, very depressed from it", Sabbath said.
A trip to the eye doctor for an exam and some eye drops provided minor relief, bringing some sight back, but Sabbath's eyes will never fully recover. Still, she has no regrets, saying, "What has happened has made me a better person, but I still want to get more".
For this tattoo enthusiast, the pain is always worth it.
