Poultry slam: Taco Bell joins the chicken wars

Irvine, California - As chicken sandwiches are soaring in popularity, a race has ensued among fast food giants, with Taco Bell being the latest to announce a new menu item. Will they impress customers, or will they chicken out?

Can't decide whether you want a taco or a sandwich? No need, as Taco Bell has decided it's time to think outside the box and put a fried chicken sandwich and a taco together. The new menu item is as simple as it is ingenious.

It will look like this: chicken marinated in jalapeño buttermilk, topped with a crunchy tortilla chip coating, and served in flatbread shaped like a taco.

An extra spicy version will include more jalapeño slices.

The taco chain is the fourth fast food brand to introduce a chicken sandwich to its menu in February. More chains are pivoting to poultry because data shows that Americans are consuming more chicken and less beef.

You may have a taste of the taco-sandwiches for $2.49 at participating restaurants in Nashville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, beginning on March 11, as reported by CNN.

If the initial test run proves a success, a national rollout is expected for later this year.

The next big chain to up the ante in the chicken wars is McDonald's, which is set to launch three new chicken sandwiches.
