Colombo, Sri Lanka - A incident during the awards ceremony for Mrs. Sri Lanka now means legal consequences for the former winner.

In a bizarre display of distinctly "un-royal" behavior and downright fury, former winner Caroline Jurie (28) publicly claimed during the April 4 crowning ceremony that her successor Pushpika de Silva (31) did not deserve the crown she had just received.

Taking matters into her own hands right after quite forcefully putting the crown onto de Silva's head, Jurie returned to center stage to take the microphone.

Jurie claimed she was merely upholding committee rules as she told the audience that their new queen was a fraud as a divorcee. The ex-winner then tore the crown from de Silva's head and unceremoniously placed it on the runner-up, who then burst into tears.

Clearly humiliated, de Silva retreated – and later reported she had suffered head injuries from the forceful removal of the crown, which was pinned into her hair, and had to be treated at a hospital.

Participants in the Mrs. Sri Lanka and Mrs. World contests have to be legally married. Caroline Jurie is the reigning Mrs. World 2020 and was Mrs. Sri Lanka 2019.

The dethroned de Silva later defended herself on Facebook, saying she was qualified for the award because though she lives separately from her husband, she is still married to him.

A police report filed by de Silva resulted in the arrest of Caroline Jurie.

On Thursday, Mrs. World was in fact detained by police and is due to appear in court later in April on charges of intimidating and injuring another person.

De Silva has since had her crown returned.

Organizers said they had urged the reigning Mrs. World to apologize, but she had so far failed to do so.

The Mrs. World organizers wrote in a statement that they regretted the behavior. The beauty pageant is to be held in Sri Lanka later this year.
