Uber driver tragically stabbed to death by teenage passenger
National City, California - A 17-year-old is currently in custody on suspicion of stabbing a San Diego–Tijuana region Uber driver to death.
Last Tuesday afternoon at around 3 PM, a witness called 911, saying that they had just seen a woman being attacked inside her car in National City.
According to NBC San Diego, the victim, who has since been identified as 58-year-old Raquel Spohn Wehber, was in the driver's seat when police arrived.
She was suffering from multiple stab wounds, and later died at the scene.
Thanks to multiple witnesses, investigators were able to arrest a 17-year-old suspect who was seen fleeing from the crime scene.
She left a trail of blood that officers followed to a mobile home nearby, where she was hiding.
There, she had blood all over her, NBC Boston reported. Her motive is not yet known.
Because she is a minor, the teenager's identity remains confidential. But as the San Diego County District Attorney's Office told People, she is being charged with one count of murder and one count of torture.
Uber said she reportedly requested a ride using someone else's account, since underage passengers are not allowed to use the service. The company said the account had since been banned, and detectives were in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the account holder.
The suspect plead not guilty to the charges.
Victim leaves behind two daughters and two young grandsons
Daniela Martinez, Spohn Wehber's daughter, has since created a GoFundMe page in order to "assist with getting the family back on our feet."
"She was filled with laughter, lived life by her own terms and always managed to make friends wherever she went. She lived life with joy and loved the time spent with her family. She will be forever missed," Martinez said.
Spohn Wehber leaves behind two daughters and two young grandsons.
"While my sister and I are appreciative of all the memories shared with my Mom, my nephews will never get to experience the greatness of my Mom. They were robbed of that opportunity when my Mom was murdered," Martinez added.
Some Uber drivers banned together to proffer that Uber itself had a responsibility to support Spohn Wehber's family.
As a memorial photo of showed Spohn Wehber with wings, many friends – and even fellow drivers who had never met her – left messages affirming that heaven had surely gained another angel.
