Dr. Robert Lesslie (70), his wife Barbara (69) their two grandchildren, as well as James Lewis (38), who was working at Lesslie's home, were all pronounced dead at the scene.

The Associated Press quoted an anonymous source who said that Dr. Lesslie was treating the 32-year-old Adams, but York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson would not confirm or deny this statement.

Tolson said that evidence at the scene led them to Adams' location at his parents home in Rock Hill. Numerous attempts were made to get Adams out of the residence, including the use of a loudspeaker and a robot to scan the house.

After hours without ant contact or movement, authorities went inside to search the property, and eventually found Adams dead in a closet, with one gunshot wound to the head.

The weapons used in the shooting were reportedly a Colt 45 pistol and a 9 mm pistol.

Law enforcement has yet to uncover a motive, but they've started the investigation into the shooting.

The long-lasting effects of football

Throughout his 78 NFL games, Adams had his fair share of injuries. According to ESPN, he suffered an ankle injury when he played for the San Francisco 49ers, which led him to be released and traded, eventually ending up at the Oakland Raiders. It was there that Adams suffered from two concussions over the space of three games.

It's unknown whether he dealt with long-lasting trauma from the concussions, but his father Alonzo Adams believes the game left its mark on his son in a very negative way.

He told WCNC-TV, "I can say he’s a good kid – he was a good kid, and I think the football messed him up", he continued. "He didn’t talk much and he didn’t bother nobody".

Officials are continuing their investigation into the tragedy.
