Police arriving at the scene shortly after midnight on Sunday (local time) found six bodies and a seriously injured man who later died in hospital, authorities in Colorado Springs said.

Local law enforcement report that the shooter was among the dead, having completed his rampage and then turned the gun on himself.

The alleged perpetrator was the boyfriend of a female victim and shot himself after the bloodbath, police said. Investigations into the motive are ongoing.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis released a statement Sunday, declaring the shooting to be "devastating, especially as many of us are spending the day celebrating the women in our lives who have made us the people we are today."

A shooting at a mall in Miami this weekend was one of at least nine separate mass shootings this past weekend, according to CNN. A little boy visiting a toy store was among three people shot in Times Square on Saturday.

The latest string of shootings comes a month after President Joe Biden first put forward his vision for serious gun control reform in America. Though individual states have largely made legislation determining gun ownership, the recent rise in mass shootings could spur gun control advocates to push harder for federal intervention.

The CDC recorded a total of 39,707 firearm deaths in 2019 alone - or nearly 110 deaths per day. About 60% of the cases were suicides.
