Ukrainian sailor tries to sink his Russian boss' yacht in Spain

Mallorca, Spain - On the island of Mallorca, a Ukrainian sailor tried to sink the yacht of his Russian employer in reaction to the invasion of his home country, according to reports.

Police at the Spanish vacation destination arrested the man on Sunday, the regional newspapers Diario de Mallorca and Última Hora as well as other Spanish media reported on Monday, citing Mallorcan authorities. The police unit the Civil Guard in Palma confirmed the reports.

The crime reportedly occurred on Saturday in the port of Porto Adriano near Santa Ponsa in the South West of the Mediterranean island. The modern marina is flanked with superyachts, upscale restaurants and stores, and beachfront areas.

The Ukrainian, who worked as an engine keeper on the luxury yacht Lady Anastasia, had opened several valves, among other things. The aim was to flood the engine room.

The 157-foot-long yacht, which cost about $7.85 million, was severely damaged. There were no injuries.

The man from Kyiv admitted to the crime in front of a judge and allegedly explained that he had acted out of revenge for the Russian attack on his homeland.

He reportedly claimed that his boss was a high-ranking member of a Russian company that produced weapons of war.

The man also was quoted as saying his house in Ukraine had been destroyed in the Russian attack. After the hearing, he was let out on conditional release.

According to the Diario de Mallorca, the man plans to return to Ukraine soon and fight for his country.
