Sixth grade girl injures three in Idaho middle school shooting
Rigby, Idaho- A sixth-grader fired shots at a school in Idaho, hitting two classmates and an adult, according to police.
The small town of Rigby was shaken to its core on Thursday after being the site of only the second school shooting in the state's history. Three people were injured and were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said.
The student pulled a handgun from her backpack and fired several shots, first in a hallway and then outside, Anderson continued.
A female teacher was eventually able to disarm her and detain her until police officers arrived, he said, adding that the suspected shooter is in custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Prosecutor Mark Taylor confirmed his office would file charges as soon as the investigation was complete, "for possibly three counts of attempted murder". Along with cooperation from multiple county police precincts, the FBI is also investigating the case.
"This is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face," said School District Superintendent Chad Martin, adding that although they had prepared for such situations, they were never truly ready for it.
East Idaho News has reported that a local bomb squad was dispatched to investigate a local home in connection with the shooting and is awaiting updates.
Parents were asked to pick up their children from school after the incident, and classes were to be canceled across the school district Friday.
