Twitter wants you to shop while you tweet

San Francisco, California - Twitter seems to be constantly offering more services, from subscription-only content to monetizing followers. Now, businesses will be able to sell their products directly through the platform, similar to Facebook Shops.

This isn't the first time Twitter has experimented with shopping.

According to the company's latest announcement, Twitter hoped to make online shopping on the platform a reality about six years ago, but ultimately pursued other developmental goals first.

9to5Mac reported that if a Twitter user has a connected Shop Module, visitors to their page will soon be able to peruse products on a virtual carousel, and be able to purchase items without ever leaving the site.

"As we learn, we’re creating deeper partnerships with businesses that reflect whom we’re building for with a new Merchant Advisory Board," Twitter product lead Bruce Falck said in the introductory blog post.

He went on to explain that the brands selected to help on the newly formed Board will be the "best-in-class examples of merchants on Twitter," and that their input should help to serve businesses of all sizes.

The intention is that the shopping extension will be a useful addition to the Professional Profiles feature introduced earlier this year, giving companies a better way to make use of Twitter as a one-stop-shop for their customers.
