Twitter users report major outage as Elon Musk announces changes
San Francisco - Twitter users all over the world reported a massive outage on Wednesday evening as Elon Musk rolled out "significant backend server architecture changes" to the platform.
DownDetector showed a significant spike in reports from users struggling to access Twitter or see any tweets.
The problems seemed to be mostly with the website rather than the app.
At the height of the disruption around 11 PM EST, DownDetector reported more than 10,000 reports.
The hashtag #TwitterDown soon started trending, as users flooded the platform with complaints.
It was the biggest outage since Elon Musk took over the company, but the billionaire wasn't sweating it too much.
"Can anyone see this here or is Twitter broken?" wrote the comedy account greg.
"Works for me," came Musk's curt reply.
The Elon Musk rollercoaster continues
Musk did eventually add something in the way of an explanation: "Significant backend server architecture changes rolled out. Twitter should feel faster."
By Thursday morning, the site was back up and running normally.
The outage was just the latest point on the rollercoaster ride that is Musk's ownership of Twitter. From mass layoffs and botched launches, to reinstating banned accounts and ruling by poll – at least when results suited him – the Tesla CEO has packed several years worth of drama in just a few short months.
How long that will continue is up for debate, as the 51-year-old aims to step down as chief executive as soon as he finds an appropriate replacement.
