Tampa police issue dance challenge to TikTok teens they almost ran over
Tampa, Florida - After an officer drew criticism on TikTok for driving his car into a group of dancers, the police decided to issue a dance challenge instead of a citation.
The TikTok clip, posted on Sunday by user @cnljayy, starts out normally enough - a group of teens standing in front of a service station, banging out the tunes and donning their dancing shoes.
As one teen wheels a speaker along, blasting the boogie, the group gets into formation for their dance number. The cameraman gives the signal and the boys launch into coordinated moves as they walk towards the camera.
Behind them, though, an unmarked police car drives up and immediately comes towards the group, sirens blaring.
Police officer bumps into dancer with car, tries to shut down dance
The driver bumps into one of the dancers. Visibly surprised, the bumped man jumps to the side and stands next to a buddy, who has also stopped.
Despite this, the rest of the crew doesn't seem to have noticed a thing, possibly because of the music's volume. The camera keeps rolling, and the remaining dancers stay in sync while donning some big smiles.
After the bump, a police officer gets out of the car and snatches the jukebox, pulling it towards him. Unsuccessful at first, he tries to turn the music off.
At this point, the video ends, as the TikTokers likely realized how dangerous the situation had suddenly become. The police officer had ran into one of their buddies and was clearly agitated.
Despite the police officer's reaction to the TikTok teens dancing, the clip went crazy viral
The original poster, who goes by Jayy, captioned his clip: "The cop really hit my friend!" While it's not clear how things went once filming stopped, the video now has more than 13 million views, with commenters replying in outrage at the cop and with complements for the dancers.
Some commenters first hoped the whole scene was a set-up, one user writing "Please tell us that he was a part of your video." Others criticized the police officer's behavior, calling it "reckless."
The group regularly films themselves dancing at various urban locations such as parks, gas stations, and hotels. It's hard to determine if the whole thing was staged or if they just took advantage of the cop's flashing lights for a great background effect, not expecting that he would drive forward.
Under another of Jayy's videos, a commenter pointed out the reactions of onlookers, who generally don't seem to be in on the act.
Tampa Police issue dance challenge in response to TikTok drama
The Daily Dot shared this week that the Tampa Police Department reached out to Jayy via private message.
"Hey there... we now challenge you and your crew to a dance off at Tampa Police headquarters!" the message reads, complete with plenty of smiling emojis. "We will provide the car and lights for your video. Let's make it happen".
We're not sure if there will ever be a part two, possibly complete with a far friendlier cop. But if there is - it's going to be epic!
