Harry Potter TikToker Vicky "Redheadbegins" Boss dominates as Hogwarts exchange student
Berlin, Germany - When an acting student decided to explore what life would be like for a stereotypical German student at Hogwarts, she never expected to go crazy viral on TikTok.
Her creation is more than just a beer-loving German student imagined in the world of Harry Potter. Instead, the disturbing character that Vicky has created has a penchant for torturing her classmates, and might be scarier than the Dark Lord himself.
Created by 23-year-old Viktoria Boss, who goes by @redheadbegins on her TikTok channel, the brusque German foreign exchange student has amassed a following of more than 315,000 people on social media.
TAG24 spoke with Viktoria about what goes into making her magically evil character, the message she's trying to send with each upload, and what it's like to suddenly become a viral influencer.
Vicky's German Hogwarts exchange student an appropriate stereotype
Her character, Loca, is portrayed as a stereotypically German foreign exchange student who unflinchingly questions Lord Voldemort with a bold directness that couldn't possibly exist in the Harry Potter books.
Vicky's followers often ask if she is actually German, due to her frequent references to Oktoberfest and smuggling special beers into Hogwarts.
Her answer to such questions is, quite simply, "Yes! I’m starting my third year of studying acting in Berlin. I’ve always loved to entertain people and get into characters, so I definitely fall into the cliché of always having wanted to do acting."
Redheadbegins Harry Potter TikToker has had a "long journey"
Viktoria started her college acting studies in Texas, explaining why her English has practically no accent when she is not in-character.
"It’s been a long journey with a lot of setbacks to get here, though. For one, I’ve often been told to do acting as a hobby and study something 'real,' and second, getting into the industry isn’t that easy," she shared, adding that she certainly didn't expect to make her break online.
When her character is not at Death Eater meetings, she's best friend to the unfeelingly evil Delores Umbridge, and enjoys torturing poor Neville Longbottom. She often uses the unforgivable "Cruciatus" torture curse on her classmates and gets away with it because she "[enjoys] the privileges of diplomatic immunity."
However, Viktoria didn't develop her character for pure entertainment: "I grew up with [Harry Potter] and absolutely loved the movies and books as a kid, and still do. The lore has so much to offer, and it’s one of my top fantasy worlds."
German exchange student at Hogwarts has a message for J. K. Rowling
Surprisingly, Viktoria's comical videos actually have a deeper motive, as Vicky Price wants to send a message to the series' author.
"J. K. Rowling has said and done a lot of questionable and problematic things, so [my character is] meant as a humorous way to voice criticism towards her while still finding a way to enjoy [the Harry Potter franchise] without agreeing with or supporting the author," she explained.
Rowling has made headlines in the last few years for expressing transphobic views that drew criticism from the LGBTQ+ community, while also alienating countless Harry Potter fans.
It's clear that Vicky's fans love her Potter-world clips for the same reasons she created them; she has made it possible to express resentment towards Rowling's views without having to throw away an entire childhood of memories.
"The series started out after I saw another creator, @munchy_monk, make an 'If J. K. Rowling wrote a Latino character', poking at the fact that any non-English characters in her works are heavily stereotyped and shallow. So I added the 'If J. K. Rowling wrote a German character' as part of that series, given that I’m German myself."
Harry Potter parody and German exchange student sketches not the end of Vicky's acting career
Viktoria hopes to continue on in both theater and film as an actor: "I’m mainly learning theater acting and I love the craft, but for example, I’ve recently been cast in a short film [called Obsession] as well and would love to be able to make a living doing what I love."
"Acting is a huge part of culture, and I’d be honored to just be a small part of that," she said.
She also wants to help promote change in the industry, by pushing for improved working conditions and "more realistic, less objectified female characters."
Meanwhile, her TikTok followers are loving every minute of her evil presence, and hope there will be more to come.
