TikTok's white bubble frog looks like an alien - but what is it really?
A bizarre video of a strange, alien-like animal has been waking waves across the internet. But what is the white bubble frog, why does it look like an alien, and what the heck's going on?
With pasty-white poofy skin, googly eyes, and short arms with long claws, this creepy creature could easily be mistaken for a real-life Pokémon. But what is it, really?
Millions of people have stumbled across the TikTok footage posted by @skuttlesrock, and subsequently been asking themselves this exact same question.
The clips, which show a bloated blob floating around in an aquarium, seem out of this world. This white bubble frog might seem like an alien, but few know what it actually is.
What is the white bubble frog?
Don't worry, the aliens haven't started invading (yet)! These alien-looking frogs are actually suffering from a strange disease.
To be precise, Skuttles Rock is a female, nine-year-old African albino clawed frog. Her name also explains her pale skin color and claws.
The huge blisters tainting her body are caused by a disease called "bloat" or "dropsy." The primary symptom of the syndrome is severe bloating of the abdomen and legs due to all the fluid that has built up inside the body.
The disease has made this alien-looking frog a star
Skuttles' disease has made her a superstar on TikTok. She recently broke a new record when one of her videos hit over 44 million views and four million likes – within only four days!
Meanwhile, viewers came up with hilarious theories to explain the frog's odd appearance. One even joked "He's got a lot on his mind."
"Living mozzarella?" another asked, before another commenter chimed in with the question "How did my ex get in there?"
Don't worry about the white bubble frog, he's just fine
Skuttles' owners have used a follow-up video to explain that the little dude is doing fine despite the circumstances.
The poor frog had been suffering from the skin bumps for around three years before the researchers found her and took her in.
Skuttle seems to be in good hands, and is expected to recover soon. Until then, though, she will continue to mesmerize (and scare) the internet with her extraordinarily bizarre look.
