Facebook makes big decision affecting political content on News Feeds

Menlo Park, California - After creating an outside organization to handle election-related decisions, Facebook is make more changes to the way it handles politics: the amount of political content shown in users' News Feeds will be limited.

Some political news outlets could be upset by the move, according to Axios, as this could affect the number of readers driven to their websites.

Facebook said it will take its next steps gradually to make things easier on those publications. It did not reveal exactly what content falls under the "political" label but specified that only 6% of all content qualifies.

The tests Facebook is currently running in the US are based on training its algorithm to rely less on certain cues, like probabilities about engagement or the chance that a user will share a particular post.

The platform wants to expand these tests to other countries as well. Facebook has already experimented with limits in several European countries and Costa Rica.

Despite all these efforts, many users reportedly complained that there was still far too much political content on their feeds. They often cited being upset with how much fighting was happening online over politics.

Facebook will also try and use more surveys to better tailor News Feeds to user preferences, and will stop recommending politically-related groups to join.

Another goal is to reduce the amount of political news stories published directly to the site, which usually take some time to fact-check and can sometimes spread misinformation before being verified.
