"Disaster Girl" sells her iconic meme for a whopping price

Mebane, North Carolina - At only four-years-old, Zoe Roth involuntarily became an internet star. Today, 16 years later, she's finally capitalizing on her iconic meme – to the tune of $473,000!

In 2005, Zoe and her family went for a walk in their hometown of Mebane, North Carolina, when they heard sirens and soon reached a burning house in their neighborhood.

Fascinated by the flames, Zoe's father Dave Roth used his new camera and unceremoniously snapped a photo of his daughter grinning ambiguously – while the fire blazed in the background.

Three years later, the image went viral after winning JPG magazine's Emotion Capture contest – and became known online to millions of users overnight.

"I was standing there looking evil, as if I started the fire – but oh my gosh, no, I didn't," Zoe told the New York Post.

The internet, however, didn't care – and Zoe Roth became known as "Disaster Girl".

In 2021, 16 years later, the "Disaster Girl" image has now been sold in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) – a special digital signature that enables the meme to be sold just like a piece of art – to a collector simply known as @3FMusic.

As reported by Gizmodo, it could be Farzin Fardin Fard, CEO of a Dubai-based music production company, who purchased the token for 180 ether – worth about $430,000 at the time of the sale. The cryptocurrency has since appreciated in value.

But that's not all: Whenever the meme is sold again in the future, Zoe and her father will receive 10% of the proceeds!

However, Zoe doesn't want to keep all the money for herself, and said she is currently looking for charities to support financially.

And what is "Disaster Girl" up to today? The 21-year-old is currently studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
